Google CEO Sundar Pichai said in an interview published on October 21, 2026, that he expects AI agents to unify the experience across Search, Gemini and other Google products. He announced no product, date or change for websites. It matters to anyone whose business depends on Google traffic.
What we know
- Where he said it: on the Sources podcast, in a 59-minute episode posted to YouTube on October 21, 2026, titled "Sundar Pichai on Gemini 4 and the AI compute crunch". According to Search Engine Journal, the interviewer is Alex Heath.
- One box: Pichai said Gemini already offers chat and tasks, and that his near-term vision is "one box" for both (minute 37).
- More queries that ask to get things done: he said that when Google classifies what people ask Gemini, the share of "more agentic" queries keeps rising (minute 37).
- For more users: according to Pichai, these features launched mainly to Ultra and Pro subscribers and will become more widely available "in the next few months" (minute 38). He added that Google is working on it "from search".
- The key question: the interviewer asked whether Search, AI Overviews and Gemini will ever fully merge. Pichai answered: "I expect our agents to provide that unifying experience across these products" (minute 43). Rather than merging products, he said, a layer of agents that run in the cloud and know your context ties the experience together.
- How agents use the web: Pichai said two paths coexist today. One is agents using a browser the way a person does. The other is protocols, such as the MCP agent protocol or payment protocols like UCP, which Google launched with other companies. In his view, protocols scale better but will take longer (minutes 39-40).
- What he didn't say: no dates, no new product names, no changes to how Google treats websites. Search Engine Journal's headline, about Search being "absorbed" into an agentic layer, is that outlet's reading.
What changes and what doesn't
Nothing changes for your site today. There's no search update, no new rule and no dated product. Search Console, Google's guidelines and crawling stay the same.
What changes is the stated direction: Google's CEO describes a search engine that, beyond returning results, does tasks for the user. If that arrives, more visits will go through an agent before reaching your site, or instead of reaching it. That reading is this article's, not Pichai's.
How to tell if you're affected
You're affected if your business gets customers from Google. Three checks for today:
- Keep the important things in text. Services, prices, hours, service area and contact details, written on the page. What only lives in an image or a PDF is harder for anyone to read: a person on a phone, Google or an agent.
- Make sure your forms work without tricks. If an agent uses a browser like a person, whatever trips up a person (broken steps, buttons that don't respond, pop-ups covering the form) trips it up too. Test your contact or booking form on a phone, start to finish.
- Make your structured data match the page. If you use local business, product or service markup, check that it matches what's visible. It guarantees nothing, but it keeps a machine from reading one thing while a person reads another.
And keep measuring: in Search Console, the web search performance report is where a shift in Google traffic shows up first.
