GEO, AEO and AIO are three names for the same goal: getting your content shown and cited when an AI writes the answer. GEO is generative engine optimization, AEO is answer engine optimization, and AIO is mostly used for Google's AI Overviews. Heading into SEO in 2027, Google says all of this is still SEO.
What is GEO and how does it affect SEO in 2027?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization. It has nothing to do with geographic location: that is local SEO.
The term comes from a study presented at the KDD 2024 conference. It calls generative engines the search engines that gather information from several sources and summarize it with a language model. The study measured that some content changes can raise visibility in those answers by up to 40%, and that the effect varies by topic.
- What it aims for: the AI uses your page as a source and cites it.
- Where you see it: Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, and assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini.
- What helped most in the study: citing sources, adding quotations and giving figures with their origin.
AEO: answer engine optimization
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It aims to make your content the direct answer to a question: in featured snippets, in voice assistants and, mostly today, in answers written by an AI.
In practice it is very close to GEO. Google's guide for AI search treats AEO and GEO as two labels for the same thing.
A practical AEO example
Use the real question as the heading and answer it in the first paragraph, with no detours. Then add the detail. That is how we open our news items: the answer first, then the facts and the sources.
AIO: one acronym, two meanings
AIO is used in two ways. The most common is as short for AI Overviews, the summaries Google shows above the results. The other is "AI Optimization", as a general name for everything above.
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in those features and no special optimizations. The page has to be indexed and meet the normal Search requirements.
How to measure it
- In Search Console, with the generative AI performance report.
- By searching for your brand and reading what the AI says about you. We covered it in Google AI Overviews Now Show on 80% of Brand Searches.
GEO, AEO and AIO: key differences
| GEO | AEO | AIO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Generative Engine Optimization | Answer Engine Optimization | AI Overviews (or AI Optimization) |
| Goal | The AI uses you as a source and cites you | Being the direct answer to a question | Appearing in Google's AI summary |
| Where you see it | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and AI Mode | Featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answers | Above Google's results |
| Where it comes from | An academic study from 2023-2024 | An industry term that predates generative AI | A Google feature |
How to integrate GEO, AEO and AIO into your SEO strategy
- Start with regular SEO: pages that are indexable, fast and well linked. Google's AI features rely on the same ranking.
- Answer the question first and add the detail after.
- Cite your sources and give figures with their origin.
- Review by hand what you draft with AI. Google has asked for it since October 1, 2026: we explain it in Google: Fact-Check AI Content by Hand Before Publishing.
- Measure with Search Console and check what the AI says about your brand.
What you do not need, according to Google: files such as llms.txt, splitting content into small chunks, or writing differently for AI.
SEO 2027 FAQ
What is GEO and why does it matter in 2027?
GEO is Generative Engine Optimization: getting AI search engines to use your content as a source and cite it. It matters because more and more searches show an AI-written answer before the links.
Is GEO the same as local SEO?
No. GEO does not come from "geography" but from "generative engine". Location work (Google Maps, Business Profile, "near me" searches) is local SEO.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
AEO is the older term and focuses on being the direct answer. GEO is newer and focuses on being cited by a generative AI. Today they are used almost as synonyms, and Google treats them as SEO.
Do I need special tools or an llms.txt file?
No. Google says its Search does not use those files and that no special optimizations are needed. What does help is measuring with the generative AI report in Search Console.
