Anthropic has expanded its Claude for Startups program. Approved companies get a free year of Claude Team for up to five Premium seats and $1,000 in API credits. TechCrunch reported it on October 6, 2026. Startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two can apply, and venture backing is not required.
What we know
- What happened: the official program page says Anthropic is expanding the program. TechCrunch dates the announcement to October 6, 2026, during SF Tech Week in San Francisco.
- What an approved company gets: $1,000 in Claude API credits, a free year of Claude Team and up to $45,000 in offers from partner companies, according to the program page. Those offers come from independent third-party companies, not from Anthropic.
- The Claude Team year: free for up to five Premium seats, and only for organizations that are new to Team. Companies already on that plan do not qualify for the offer, the page says.
- Who can apply: startups founded in the last five years or funded in the last two.
- What you need: a Claude Console account, a company email that matches your website's domain, and a short description of what you are building.
- Investors: not required. The page says bootstrapped, pre-seed and venture-backed startups are all eligible. Founders backed by an investor in Anthropic's partner network can get up to $100,000 in additional credits, claimed through that investor.
- Review: Anthropic says it reviews every application. Most are decided within minutes; the rest go to a manual review that usually takes two to three business days.
- Expiry: API credits expire six months after they are granted.
- Where they work: only on Anthropic's own Claude API, through Claude Console. They cannot be used on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI or other third-party platforms.
- Extras: higher API rate limits, 45-minute office hours every two weeks with Anthropic's Applied AI team, and access to events.
- Countries: the program page does not list countries. Anthropic publishes a separate list of regions where it offers its API. The program terms exclude companies from a list of countries and territories, including Cuba, Russia and China.
What changes and what doesn't
For a small business, the point is that investors are not required. A company under five years old, with its own domain and a product in progress, can apply.
Approval is not automatic. The program terms, last updated on May 22, 2025, say Anthropic weighs business traction, investment and Claude usage, and decides at its sole discretion. It also reserves the right to cancel, modify or suspend the program.
It is not permanent either. A thousand dollars in credits that expire in six months is enough to test and build a prototype, not to run a service for years.
The page does not say what happens to Claude Team when the free year ends. The safe assumption is that the plan becomes a paid one. That is this article's reading, not a statement from Anthropic.
How to tell if it fits you, and what to do today
- Check the two dates. When the company was founded and when it last raised money. Meeting one of the two conditions is enough.
- Check your email. The application asks for a company email that matches your website's domain. If the business still runs on a free Gmail or Outlook address, you need the domain, the website and a mailbox on that domain first.
- Get your website in order. The application asks for your domain and a description of what you are building, and Anthropic says it reviews each one. Your site should tell the same story as your application.
- Decide what the credits are for before you apply. The six-month clock starts when they are granted. Pick one use and measure it: an assistant that answers questions about your products, sorting incoming email, first drafts of your store's product pages.
- Check where your app runs. If you already reach Claude through Bedrock or Vertex AI, these credits do not apply there.
- Put the end of the free year in your calendar. Ask in advance what the plan will cost afterwards, and decide early whether you keep it.
- Don't pick a provider for the credits alone. Other AI and cloud companies run similar programs for young companies. Test each model on your real tasks, in the language your customers read, and keep your prompts and data in a form you can move.
