Free Gemini Drops to Flash-Lite Only From October 9

Google is changing which Gemini models each plan can use on personal accounts in October 2026. From October 9, people who use Gemini for free will get Flash-Lite only, according to Google's help page. Flash stays with the paid plans, and Pro with AI Pro and AI Ultra. It matters to anyone doing real work on the free tier.

What we know

  • Where Google says it: on its help page "Changes to Gemini model access and limits". The RSS feed of Google's official blog carried no post about it on October 4.
  • When: the changes start to take effect on October 9 for users without an AI subscription. AI Plus subscribers will get an email with their date, the page says.
  • Who: Gemini Apps used with a personal account.
  • Effort level: for each available model you will be able to pick low, medium or high. More effort gives more thorough answers but uses more of your limit, according to Google.
  • Deep Think: the option is for AI Pro and AI Ultra.
  • Usage limits: the same page says they are compute-based and refresh every 5 hours until you reach a weekly limit. No plan, standard limits; AI Plus, 2x; AI Pro, 4x.
  • Versions: the page gives no version numbers. 9to5Google, which reported it on October 3, names Flash-Lite 3.5, Flash 3.6 and Pro 3.1.

Which models each plan gets, according to the table on Google's page:

What changes and what doesn't

What changes is the model that answers when you use Gemini without paying: Flash-Lite only, the first of the three in the table. According to 9to5Google, free users lose access to Flash and Pro, and AI Plus subscribers lose Pro.

Nothing changes for AI Pro and AI Ultra, which keep all three models. And the page only talks about personal accounts: it does not mention work or school accounts, or API access.

There are things the page does not say. It gives no reason for the change. It does not compare the quality of the three models, so this article makes no claim about how much answers will differ. And one date is still open: the one for AI Plus. 9to5Google adds that it is not clear where Gemini 4 Argon will fit.

How to tell if it affects you

It affects you if you use free Gemini, on a personal Google account, for business tasks: website copy, customer replies, summaries or data analysis. Seven steps:

  1. Check which account you sign in with. Personal or work. Google's page only covers personal accounts.
  2. Before October 9, save a baseline. Pick three or four routine tasks and keep today's prompt and answer.
  3. Afterwards, run the same tasks again and compare: correct facts, tone, long texts and tables.
  4. Check every figure and date before you publish anything on your website, whatever the model. A wrong fact hurts your page just the same.
  5. Match the effort level to the task. High effort uses more of your limit: keep it for the work that needs it.
  6. If a task no longer comes out right, decide with numbers: how many times a month you do it and what the plan costs in your country. The price is on Google's plans page.
  7. Do not tie a business process to a free plan. Its terms can change, as they did here.
