Gemini Now Edits PDFs and Docs in the Chat: What to Check

Since October 29, 2026, the Gemini app lets you create, preview and edit documents, PDFs, presentations, spreadsheets and code inside the chat itself. Google says it is available to all users in every language the app supports. PDFs work on web and mobile; every other format is web-only for now.

What we know

  • What's new: according to Google's October 29 post, a file you ask for appears right in the chat and can be expanded to full screen so you can type edits directly.
  • AI-assisted edits: Google says you can highlight a passage to ask questions about it or have Gemini rework it, or ask Gemini to refine the whole file.
  • Formats: the post lists PDFs, Google Docs, Google Sheets, slide decks, Markdown and TXT files, and code.
  • Where it works: per Google, PDF preview and editing run on web and mobile. Other formats are web-only.
  • Who gets it: Google says all users, in all languages where the Gemini app is available. It does not separate free and paid accounts.
  • Google's example: turning handwritten lecture notes into a PDF study guide, then editing it by hand and asking Gemini to change the text or visuals of a section.

What changes and what doesn't

  • The workflow changes: you no longer need to paste text into another app to fix it; the review can happen in the chat.
  • Saving is not explained: the post does not say how to export, download or save edited files to Drive, nor whether there are size limits or plan differences.
  • It's not a full PDF editor: Google talks about editing content Gemini generates or is asked to refine. It does not promise signatures, forms or similar tools.
  • AI can slip when rewriting: asking it to "improve" a section can change figures, dates or names that were already right.

How to use it safely

  1. Start on the web: unless your file is a PDF, you can't edit it inside Gemini on mobile yet.
  2. Check every number before sending: prices, dates, tax IDs, phone numbers and names. Compare the final file against your source data, not against the previous chat version.
  3. Mind customer data: before uploading contracts or lists with personal data, review your Google account activity settings or your Google Workspace policies.
  4. If the PDF goes on your website: Google can index PDFs, but a price list, a menu or a service sheet usually works better as an HTML page you can update without re-uploading files. If you do publish the PDF, keep the text selectable (not a scanned image), give it a clear title in its document properties, and link to it from a page on your site.
  5. Keep your voice: ask Gemini to follow your writing style and read the result aloud; a generic-sounding document costs trust.
